Hip-hop further allows the perpetuation of capitalism due to its widespread attractiveness to white youth rather than black youth. White youth are compelled by hip-hop music because they desire a way to differentiate their personalities from their mainstream, white, adolescent peers.

Hip hop dominated popular music in the early 2000s

In his sophomore year, he wrote a musical set in Washington Heights, conjuring the sound of the neighborhood by drawing on Latin music and hip-hop, neither of which he had ever attempted to compose before. The story line, which featured a tortured love triangle, was shopworn, but when the show was staged, in the spring of 2000, Miranda noticed that every time hip-hop was used to communicate the audience sat up in their seats. “This mix of Latin music and hip-hop was potent—there was something in that groove,” he says. This tendency toward the cheerful is grounded in aesthetic choices, certainly. Yachty is a disciple of Lil B, the irreverent and cultish Bay Area rapper whose ethos of self-love and hyperpositivity continues to influence each new micro-generation of rap. But these choices also have commercial implications. There is a growing squeaky-clean streak in hip-hop which has emerged in the wake of Chance the Rapper, who demonstrated just how profitable sheer good-naturedness could be. Chance has always been held up as the model of an independent artist, but he also has partnerships with brands like Apple, H & M, and Nestlé. While Yachty is stylistically different from Chance, he follows in this mold: after barely a year of mainstream exposure, he has become hip-hop’s ambassador to a corporate world desperate to capture the Zeitgeist. He has worked with Sprite and Target on major campaigns, and helped the clothing company Nautica revamp its image to cater to a young, digital-native audience. Yachty has achieved the strange and impressive feat of making oddballism synonymous with commercial success.

Hyper-masculinity in hip-hop music and culture is not a new social construct. Dr. Michael Eric Dyson believes that “the notion of violent masculinity is at the heart of American identity” (Dyson qtd. in Hurt). Therefore, hyper-masculinity existed long before America adopted capitalism as its ideological mindset. Hip-hop is not so different from other forms of American entertainment and media. A Personal Essay From Tamika Fuller…Fighting For My Daughter: Power, Wealth, And Hip-Hop

In other words, young, white males feel the need to show a minor form of “blackness” in order to set themselves apart from the dominant culture capital, or mainstream white society. Thus, they are reestablishing the racial hierarchy. Yet white males may be the only racial group that has the power to identify with a marginalized group and to still be considered “different” in a positive light. By listening to hip-hop music, white youths are not only trying to seem unique and obtain blackness, but they are also reinforcing our society’s current racial hierarchy—and keeping our capitalist system intact.

Miranda saw Hamilton’s relentlessness, brilliance, linguistic dexterity, and self-destructive stubbornness through his own idiosyncratic lens. It was, he thought, a hip-hop story, an immigrant’s story. Hamilton reminded him of his father, Luis A. Miranda, Jr., who, as an ambitious youth in provincial Puerto Rico, had graduated from college before turning eighteen, then moved to New York to pursue graduate studies at N.Y.U. Luis Miranda served as a special adviser on Hispanic affairs to Mayor Ed Koch; he then co-founded a political consulting company, the MirRam Group, advising Fernando Ferrer, among others. On summer breaks during high school, Lin-Manuel worked in his father’s office; later, he wrote jingles for the political ads of several MirRam clients, including Eliot Spitzer, in his 2006 gubernatorial bid. Chernow’s description of the contentious election season of 1800—the origin of modern political campaigning—resonated with Miranda’s understanding of the inner workings of politics. And the kinds of debate that Hamilton and his peers had about the purpose of government still took place, on MSNBC and Fox.

Hip-Hop, Masculinity, and Capitalism: Black Expression …

Since hip hop’s inception in the Bronx in New York in the 1970s, women have been at the forefront in shaping theculture through graffiti art, break dancing, and rapping. But as rap became the record industry’s highest-grossinggenre of music, female achievements were often overlooked. Rap became more known for its obsession with wealth andglamour and unadulterated objectification of women than for its social-commentary roots.

the black male in hip-hop culture.

Fancy motorcycles and cars, groups of community members standing on stoops, packed clubs, and women shaking their asses flash across the screen. Within the first ten seconds of the music video for T.I.’s hit single, “Ball feat. Lil Wayne,” we can see every aspect of a decades-old stereotype: the black male in hip-hop culture. But the image of the young, black male as strong, dominant, and physically powerful has allowed corporations to perpetuate the current racial ladder by giving white youth a way to “try on” a new culture. The construction of masculinity through hip-hop music has led to some surprising results: the support of capitalism and the reinforcement of racial hierarchies.

Hip hop culture essay - Oriental Plums

By the 2000s hip hop culture had become a billion dollar industry that included famous women rappers such at Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, and Trina and white rapper Eminem, the most economically successful rapper of all time. Hip hop has also achieved cultural recognition via the application of much serious scholarly inquiry and being the object of several noted national museum exhibits. Debates often center on racial ownership of the subculture and its sexist, misogynistic, homophobic, and violent elements. While debates ensue, pop rap endures as the dominant sound over many radio airwaves and pervades youth culture in language, style of dress, cultural and artistic aesthetics, and musical preferences.
