Summary and Evaluation of the Evidence for and against Reducing Gun Violence

Accordingly, the availability of guns proffers weaker attackers with the capability to perpetrate attacks on stronger victims. As such, guns accord attackers that usually shun the perpetration of crime at close quarters, with the chance to carry out their attacks in an adequate manner (Kates & Mauser, 2007). This is because; access to guns usually can facilitate attacks or assassinations carried out from a distance. Inherently, guns are normally a weapon of choice for individuals that normally shun other messier weapons as knives (Leigh & Neill, 2010). The availability of guns has been correlated to an increase in robbery and assault cases, due to their ability to intimidate and accrue cooperation from the victims. Psychologically, the sight of a gun usually triggers retaliation by the aggrieved party owing to the perceived association between violence and guns (Watkins, 2012). The second evidence presented by the proponents is the fact that guns provide a unique, quick and easy means of committing suicide. As affirmed, the use of guns to commit suicide reduces the chances for successful intervention. Suicide studies indicate that rather than a rational decision, suicide is an act engaged in at the spur of the moment. Access to a quick and easy method at this critical moment is deemed the difference between death and life. Statistical data evidences that states with low gun ownership levels report far fewer suicides as compared to those with high gun ownership rates.

The third evidence presented is based on the percentage of Americans that support gun control. As evidenced by the large number of surveys conducted on gun control, 55% of Americans support gun control. In addition both proponents and opponents of gun control similarly support strict background checks prior to gun purchases (Gold, 2013). This clearly ascertains the positivity of reducing gun violence through gun control and background checks. The fourth evidence proffered is based on the fact that most gun-related crimes and massacres are perpetrated using legal weapons. The results of the considerable research carried out on most mass shootings in the US demonstrate that all the shootings are perpetrated using privately owned and legal weapons. In addition, half of these shootings were committed using high capacity magazines or assault weapons (Chemerinsky, 2004). Gun control and removal of high capacity magazines or assault weapons from the streets would have been viable solutions for alleviating the above cases. The fifth evidence ascertains that most single active shooters are normally diagnosed with a mental health disorders, whose non-treatment and escalation leads to alleviated acts of violence. Were the said individuals accorded with additional access to mental health services and treatment, they would have avoided the eventual acts of violence.

Guns on campus would lead to an escalation in violent crime

These incidents are unfortunate; however, given the number of college campuses that allow licensed concealed carry and the length of time for which they have allowed it, this is still an impressive record. This record, coupled with the fact that not one campus-carry college has reported a resulting violent crime, threat of violence, suicide, or suicide attempt demonstrates that the licensed, concealed carry of handgun can be safely implemented on college campuses.

The sixth evidence is based on the reduction in safety both in the community and schools. As evidenced by the widespread coverage of gun-related crimes in the media over the past few years, such crimes have significantly shifted from the streets to schools compounds. Children are no longer safe in the school environment. This calls for additional measures to be put in place to secure the safety of school attending children in the school compounds and environments. The seventh evidence is based on the support for stricter rules pertaining background checks. Such will prevent the sale of guns to convicted felons as well as other prohibited individuals by unlicensed sellers through undocumented transactions (Webster & Vernick, 2014). These would also curb the transfer of guns to the purchasers by dealers before the completion of a background check. The final evidence is associated with the second amendment of the constitution. Many private gun owners frequently quote the second amendment as the constitutional and legal grounds on which their ownership of guns should be protected. This amendment is however subject to active misinterpretation and application. It only permits the possession of guns for the purpose of providing effective militia. Though this amendment can be applicable in the case of self-defense at home, it does not support the possession of high capacity magazines or assault weapons.

Now let’s take a look at the other side of the argument. The duty of a police officer is to enforce law and order in the society. During the execution of their job, they face a lot of challenges. They have to deal with people of different kinds. How can we expect an unarmed police officer to effectively deal with a situation that might itself be violent? The gun, though it may be a sign of violence, is a necessity in situations like these. It also provides some security to the lives of our police force.
